Does your domain name pass the phone test?

by Roman on May 14, 2008

Think about the domain name of your website?
Is it easy for people to understand or do they need to clarify how it’s spelled?

A simple way to determine if you have a good domain name or a bad one is to run it through a phone test.

What you should do is call up a friend who you know has internet access but who knows nothing about your blog or website and ask him to do you a small favor and check something important from a website. You can’t do it yourself because you are on the beach/driving to work/got into an accident!

Make something up! You know you can  You can let him know what it really was for later.

If your friend understands the domain name immediately – you have a good domain name. If it takes some time and explaining – maybe there is a better domain name that you should get?

If you don’t pass The Phone Test it doesn’t automatically mean that your domain is no good. Passing the test means that you have a domain name that works good with word of mouth advertising. Having an easy to understand and a memorable domain name never hurts but depending on your business you could have no direct need for it,

Paying the bills!

FinancialJesus.com passed the Phone Test. Twice. Easily! Woohhooo baby, life is good!!!!

Great idea.

On top of that, I’d say your domain name is also quite conceptually unique, which will help people remember it, and if they come across it they’ll probably want to check it out to see what it’s really about.

That worked for me:)

Hmmm, I’m pretty sure mine has failed this test multiple times (I always spell it out) but I still like it and it means something to me.

Your’s is pretty good and creative, but I wonder if it might offend some people :S

I was afraid about offending people as well, but it seems that they are pretty OK with my domain name!
Maybe it’s because all the true Christians are offended and they just leave? I really don’t know.
Seems to me that most people are nice!

A domain name can be compared to a brand name. A domain name that is easy to understand and remember would surely help in getting new and prior users to visit that website.

Additionally, I have seen that some websites have domain names that correspond to the commonly misspelt name. If a user misspells the name, the name is accepted and the user is re-directed to the correct website. As an experiment, try http://www.gogle.com (notice the missing letter o) and you would likely be redirected to http://www.google.com.

You are right – a domain name is nothing more than a brand name, and what is better than an easy to remember brand?
