Here is a top 10 list of worlds richest countries according to CIA World Factbook and Wikipedia measured by GDP per capita. For those in the dark - GDP or Gross Domestic Product - is the value of all the goods that a country produces. GDP per capita stands for the value an average person produces.
10. Switzerland - $39,800 (GDP per capita)
This cheese making country is considered to be one of the most neutral countries in the world. During World War 2, people from other European countries deposited their money in the banks of Switzerland, knowing that their money would be safer there than in their home countries. Some well known Swiss companies include Nestle, Logitech, Rolex and Credit Suisse.
9. Equatorial Guinea - $44,100
The Republic of Equatorial Guinea is a country in Central Africa. Most people have never heard of it. This country flew into stardom after 1996 when large oil reserves were found in the nation of only 0,5 million people. While being one of the largest producers of oil in Africa, little has been made to improve the living conditions of the people. Corruption is widespread and ordinary people are mostly living in poverty. The gap between rich and poor is probably the largest in the world.
8. Ireland - $45,600
This member of European Union has been often admired as one of the most modern knowledge economies in the world. Ireland is the largest maker of computer software in the world. A study done by The Economist ranked the Celtic Tiger to have the best quality of life in the world.
7. United States - $46,000
What sets the US apart from most other countries in this list is its size. While most other countries in this list are among the smallest in the world the US has a population of over 300 million and a total land area of 3,79 million square miles (9.83 million sq km). The US is also home to the largest amount of billionaires in the world. It is speculated that as many billionaires live in the US as in the rest of the world.
6. Singapore - $48,900
This country tiny country consist of 63 island and some mainland with a total area of only 270 square miles (704 sq km). With Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan it is considered one of the Four Asian Tigers. Singapore has the busiest port in the world and is the 4th largest foreign exchange trading center in the world. Singapore is widely believed to be the most business-friendly economy in the world.
5. United Arab Emirates - $55,200
This oil and natural gas rich country has a highly developed economy which makes it one of the most developed in the world. Having more money than they know what to do with, they have built numerous artificial islands and are currently building the worlds highest structure - Burj Dubai. When finished it will be 818 meters tall, being about 2 times as high as the Empire State Building in New York. It is estimated that about 1/4th of the total construction going on in the world is taking place in Dubai - the largest city in United Arab Emirates.
4. Kuwait - $55,300
In Arabic Kuwait translates to “Fortress built near water”. In addition to being on the coast of the Persian Gulf this country has well known neighbors like Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Kuwait has the worlds fifth largest proven oil reserves - about 10% of the worlds total. Being a country without taxes, about 80% of the governments revenue comes from exporting oil. 3. Norway - $55,600
Norway is one of the few highly developed countries in Europe tthat are not part of the European Union. This oil and natural gas rich country has living costs more than 30% higher than in the United States. In 2006 only Russia and Saudi Arabia exported more oil than Norway.
2. Qatar - $75,900
This Arabic speaking country has less than million people and gained independence from Great Britain only in 1971. Qatar used to be a poor Islamic country but since the discovery of oil and natural gas in the 1940s, it is completely transformed. With no income tax it is one of the least taxed countries in the world, while still offering most of its services to the population for free. (Who needs tax when you have all this oil and gas money coming in).
In 2009 Qatar is also expected to be the fastest growing economy in the world!
1. Luxembourg - $80,800
This tiny country with a total population of less than 500 000 is a true European miracle. By tiny we mean the 8 smallest country in the world. From top to bottom it’s only about 50 miles and at its widest about 30 miles.
Where does the money come from? Well, there is over 250 banks crammed into the small country! It has the largest banking concentration in the European Union and probably in the world. In addition to being rich the people are smart as well. In elementary school everyone studies in German, starting from middle school they learn in French and in highchool the main language is English. Their own language - Lëtzebuergesch. When picking up a local newspaper be prepared to find articles in all languages.

This list is based on GDp per capita which is a measurable amount, the fact speak for themselved. So, to call this list ridiculous is like calling the fortune 500 list ridiculous. If it just IS, you cannot call it ridiculous!

It actually depends on who’s statistics you believe. According to IMF (International Monetary Fund) Qatar is #1, according to the World Bank and CIA World Factbook - it’s #2.

However I think that they hold a majority of their financial assets offshore.
The pope is in a sense the richest person in the world - he can pretty much do whatever he wants for free. He has churches all over the world that in a sense belong to him.

Luxembourg isnt that rich in reality as on paper though, the reason is that there’s ALOT of people who live in other countries work in Luxembourg, and just drive over the border and work there. As they live in other countries they’re forced to tax to the country they actually live in.
So there’s alot more people contributing to the GDP then there’s actually living there. Reality is if you ytavel there is that it’s a country just like France and nothing else really, your not going to find bus drivers who take in 80.000$ a year. If you go to Norway though, you’ll find that most people actually earn atleast 55.000$. Huge diffrence.

in fact the Norwegians made a conscious decision in the 60s to keep domestic energy prices on par with the globally prevailing price level. Thus recognising that whats in the ground is not really @free@ unlike the arabs and latin americans seem to think.
Thanks to this decision, together with ptting a large part of their oil income in reserves, they are not waisting energy and have managed to avoid dutch disease, when the rest of the economy disintegrates because everything goes to the oil sector.
IMHO NOrway is the tru richest country in the world - their national oil fund has over 50t dollars per capita, no budget deficit, no government debt, high and rleatively uniform income for most people, 2% unemployment… When oil and brains meet…

Another reason why this is happening is that Norway is very keen on saving the environment. High taxes on gas makes it possible to give back to the environment to lessen the effects from pollution which are inevitable when using gas.

In terms of total wealth you are probably correct - Britain, China and India are very rich. That’s because they are large countries with a lot of people.
GDP per capita however measures “how rich a country is” by taking all the money a countries economy produces and divides it by the number of people living in that country. This way you will get a somewhat honest picture how much extra wealth a person living in that country produces.
China and India have a lot of money but when you divide it between more than 1 billion people living in these countries you will not have much left. In fact in the list China is 30 and India 126th. Britain is in the 20th place!
If you would just look how much a country makes without taking into account the amount of people living there China would be the 4th largest economy in the world, UK the 5th and India 12th.
The more people live in a country the greater potential for a larger economy!

If I ever get a holiday I am going to Luxembourg and work there in the bank if I could fine a job there. The Bus drivers may not take $80000 home but there may be people taking millions and some may be taking less then 50000. GDP is total income divided by the population.As simple as that.
A member of my family actually works in Luxembourg and I can tell you this - they do indeed get paid really good over there!

If you come to Qatar, you will see most of Qatari people wear Gucci, Versace and Luis Vuitton wherever you go. Moreover, the place where I live, each house has at least two modern cars and it is normal there. In deed Qatari people are the kindest people I’ve ever seen in my life. They are so helpful. If I had to choose between Sweden and Qatar to spend the rest of my life in, I would choose Qatar.

How much you can make hourly in Sweden is entirely up to what kind of work you are doing and how good you are at it.
According to statistics the average pay in Sweden is about 13 Euros an hour (20 dollars).
If you can’t speak Swedish then England is a better country for you to live - because you already speak English!
People in Sweden generally speak English, but it is very difficult to get a good job if you do not speak Swedish!

Yes, Germany is a very rich country but in terms of how much an average person generates wealth it does not make the top 10. It is in the 21st place while England(which was also absent from the list) is number 20.
The problem with Germany is that east Germany which used to be a communist country during the Cold War era is a lot poorer than the west part of the country. That brings their average down a bit.

I agree with you that this list does not contain the most developed countries in the world. This list contains the richest countries in the world and these 2 things don’t have to be the same. You can have a developed country that is not very rich and vice versa.
That is exactly the case with Equatorial Guinea - on average it is a very rich country but it is only the 127th highly developed country in the world.

Qatar is now worlds richest country according to both IMF and CIA, only world bank recognizes Luxemburg as richest as they have no statistics on Qatar. So its no more luxemburg at 1 but Qatar.
Luxembourg is number one because of international banking business that made them number one on the list. Most of the rich people have using international banks in Luxembourg and Switzerland. As you can see Switzerland is number 10 on the list.
one of the main things i noticed about europe is how expensive it is there, especially the european countries mentioned in this list. even if you make $50 000 a year, it will feel a lot less than if you had $50 000 a year in usa. things are a lot cheaper. and while europeans will probably spend all $50k they make, americans will probably spend $40k for the same exact stuff they buy in that years time.

Every time I visit the US I usually buy a lot of things simply because they are a lot cheaper over there.
On the other hand Europeans don’t need to buy any insurance or cover their own medical costs - so things are a bit more expensive, but you don’t need to buy all the stuff you have to in the US

If you are an IT professional you will make a lot more money than as a cleaner
In USA a professional worker in most office jobs can make between 40 000 to 100 000 dollars a year.
In the US however they sometimes won’t give you a single day for vacation (although 2 weeks is the norm). The salary of a person living in England can be a bit higher - and at the same time you don’t have to pay for your medical costs and insurance and you get 1 month of vacation every year!
So I would go for England (or Canada) - but I guess it pretty much depends on where you get a good job!

Well I have never been to Canada myself but I have visited the Niagara Falls which is right on the border of US and Canada!
In my opinion Canada is a great country - their laws are in many ways better than the one’s in the US.
A Canadian gets free access to the public health system but at the same time get paid almost the same as in the US.
Compared to the US Canada is a peaceful country as well - they are not in war with anybody!

When it comes to job opportunities I feel that the safest bet would be to find a company that wants to employ you before going to Canada. Finding a job can be something that takes 6 months and you still need living money during that time!

The rules in all the European Union countries are different. So you need to take a country and research it individually. There is a law however that says that if you are a citizen of a country in the EU, you can work and live in any country you like - this law however is not a law yet in all the countries and it is estimated that it will be passed in all the countries in 2013.
If this happens then you can take a citizenship of whatever country you like in the EU and afterward work in all European countries.
Right now the law’s are very strict and if you want a work permit you will at first need to find a job and then your future work place needs to write a statement saying that they were unable to find a specialist like you from their own country.

When it comes do the list on this page - “Top 10 richest countries in the world” - then Philippines is not one of them because its GDP divided by the number of people in the country is not enough to make it to top 10. In fact Philippines is the 131-st richest country - so in reality its actually quite poor when you compare it to most countries in the world.
On the other hand I am not saying that life in rich countries is always better. As far as I know Philippines might be the best place to live in the world!

I really appreciate you (forget what other say about this list.) Because whatever reports world bank or other organizations publish are just games of figures and numbers and nothing else.
We can say this is a thearotical list and it doesn’t reflect the fact. Some entries may be confusing such as Equatorial Guinea. Be it anything it is not a way to calculate the wealthiness of any country. We should see that country by our own eyes then only we can make some conclusion.
We should also consider the social factors. Such as standerd of living.

OK, Mr Silo Guinea may be a rich country. But if you look at the human developement index guinea is nowhere. IF Some people in the country are Rich then it doesn’t mean that overall country is rich.

This list is based on statistics from May 2008 and I am sure that I will get another list up for 2009 as well, but I’m sorry to say that it can take some months!

This is actually very true on my point of view i think that the middle east countries are getting stronger because of their resources, USA is in a recession they are in debt and OBAMA is trying his best to do what he can.

I just wanted to say that the fact that makes me the most proud of my country is not at all that it is number 1 on this list. It is the fact that it has the lowest poverty rate of all European counties. That, in addition to the fact that we have almost 40% foreigners living here, but no nationalist party or racist violence, shows that we have managed to build a healthy society.
The weather’s really crappy though…
And, by the way: The picture on top of the list shows the “Palais du Luxembourg” (Palace of Luxembourg), which is located in … Paris! Maybe you could put in a picture of Luxembourg-City, it’s a beautiful 1000 year old Unesco world heritage fortress.

Hi, I am actually from Luxembourg too. And I have travelled a lot. And I may confirm you that an average Busdriver earns 50.000 Euros a year without problems. Salaries are really very very high. Overall your list would be correct but as you point out in your article - the US has more than 300 million people while Luxembourg only has 0.5 million.
In order to get how many money each country has per person you would need to divide the amounts you have with the number of people living in these countries.
The way you represent stats is nice but it really doesn’t say anything.
You just don’t get it. It’s easier for a country with a smaller amount of people to have a larger GDP per capita than a larger country. It would be like if i started my own country and had $100,000, then would my country would be the richest country. But I do see where you are coming from in your reply. I can’t understand why a lot of comments are so serious about any country. I find it very silly when someone hail his own country and say that “my country is richest”.
This published list is just a game of numbers. If you really want to find out richest country. The only solution is go there on your own, live there at least for 1 year and travel all over the possible places. And then come and make any comment. Every country has it’s own good and bad things. We can’t compare each and every factor. There are lot of limitations.
And we can’t compare all countries in same point of view.

When i last comented, the avrage price of gas in my region was 4.4 dollers per gallon. Now it is like 2.1 dollers per gallon. So Norway has a lot of oil, so is the price staying the same? i am a filipino but married to a norweigan and now living in norway..i can say that norway is really rich…the unemployment is very low..salary is high…the medical and health services are free to its citizen..the school is free from kindergarten up to college…children receives support from the government until they are 18 years old…working mothers can avail up to a year leave from work with 80 percent salary…although everything is expensive here because of high taxation but one thing is sure that taxes are well managed and invested..that is why when one retires one receives high retirement pay which is more than enough to live in luxury..

I don’t want to attack americans in general. I worked a lot with americans, and most of those I met were really nice people. But I must say that I was a little bit shocked about some comments here in the chat. I think respect is lacking here. And someone who is using the F… word in every line must be stupid or not?

I think the F word is just an expression; some people overuse it, some use a few and some don’t use at all. It also depends where you come from and your culture. Sometimes people are shocked when they hear the F word because they never hear it, or they avoid to use it because they think it is a bad word. But, in some countries it is normal to say it when a person is mad at something. Can the F word measure the level of a person intelligent?
I don’t assume that more than half of the posts here are Americans because if I want to assume who you are, such as gender, race, age, or nationality. I think I will get about 40 percent right.
I must tell you this. I was born and raised in this beautiful country (USA), but please take note: The USA would be a great coutry if it were not for the corrution that exist in our Government. It’s plain and simple…..The people that governed this great land especially within the last two decades, have done more to destroy this country from within in such a short time than any of our enemies could do in 100yrs.
I’m still waiting for justice for the American people. I’m waiting for the day that George Bush is tried for the crimes he and his “crony’s” have committed against the citizens of the United States and other countries. He is a criminal and truly should face the same fate as the Iraqi leader did.
It’s true My Country (USA) is filled with greed and hate. I’m very puzzled how we can dictate to other countries about democracy when it truly does not exist here in our country (USA). We preach fair and balanced elections…..yeah right, we have not had a fair and balanced election for decades. Even with the most recent election of President Obama, we had to continue to fight voting discrepancies. This time we prevailed but what about future elections. Our system has been corrupt for many, many decades.
It time to truly change from the previous leaders and their beliefs or this country will destroy itself.
Our Country (USA), is BROKE….. We are issuing bad notes; US currency. The only thing keeping us “afloat” is our military dominance. We will take from others before we let ourselves go down. We will also destroy the world if any attempts are made to destoy us. It’s that plain and that simple.

honestly,people should actually concentrate on what they do to improve their lives individually and commulatively that can help their countries in ruins.
