Top 10 happiest countries in the world

Here is a list of TOP 10 happiest countries in the world. The basis of this list is research done by professor Ruut Veenhoven who runs the World Database of Happiness at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

How is happiness measured?

Happiness can be very subjective. Some people are happy when it rains, others are happy when the sun is shining. So how is it measured? Apparently the people at World Database of Happiness take into account a number of different things such as average life expectancy and most importantly the answer to the following multiple choice question “How happy are you?” (Although the actual question has varied a bit throughout the years). Having all the variables they run it through a computer and get a number from 1 to 10. The bigger the number, the happier the country

Happiest countries in the world

10. Luxembourg – 7.6 points

Living in the worlds richest country inevitably puts a smile on your face! This small landlocked European country has an army of 800 people (yes, 800). They don’t have a navy nor an air force but together with Belgium they can afford to own 1 military cargo plane. Beat that US!

According to the Guinness Book of World Records Luxembourg holds the world record as the country that consumes most alcohol in the world per citizen.

9. Guatemala – 7,6 points

This Central American country borders with Mexico in the north and is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. This location makes it a very difficult country to stay happy in – Guatemala is frequently ravished by hurricanes and earthquakes that often kill thousands of people. Main exports of Guatemala include coffee, sugar and bananas. The latter is probably why they are so happy – have you ever seen someone that can stay sad while eating a banana? 56% of all Guatemalans live in poverty. If you ask me, they can use the cheap bananas!

8. Canada – 7,6 points

Many people have no idea that Canada’s head of state is actually Queen Elizabeth II – the head of the British Monarchy. This meant that when Britain declared war on Germany in World War I, Canada was automatically at war with the soon to be Nazi country. Unlike the neighboring US, Canada has never cancelled its relations with Cuba and has declined to take part from the Iraq War – instead, it has played a leading role in the United Nations peacekeeping missions and helped to launch a $1.5 billion initiative to help develop vaccines that could save millions of people in poor countries. It seems that happy people make a happy country!

7. Sweden – 7,7 points

This “welfare state” model is an excellent example of effective national taxes.  Among other things the state provides universal tax-funded childcare, parental leave, health care, education (including university), retirement pensions and sick leave. Including value added tax (VAT – kind of like sales tax), it is possible to pay up to 80% of your income as taxes. Contrary to popular belief, Swedes are quite OK with their high taxes – after all it gives them tons of high quality services and they almost never need to take drastic action like taking quick payday
loans
just to make ends meet. In fact, most of the services for the public are free, so what’s not to be happy about?

Sweden is also the home of IKEA – the worlds largest furniture store. IKEA’s founder Ingvar Kampard is famous for being the 7th richest person in the world (Net worth $31 billion) and driving a 15 year old Volvo station wagon. It has been claimed that more people read the Ikea catalogue than the Bible – and that one in ten Europeans have been conceived on an Ikea bed.

6. Australia – 7,7 points

The name “Australia” comes from the Latin word “Australis”, meaning “Southern”. Australia is the only country in the world, that consists of an entire continent. Between 1788 and 1868 the British used Australia as a colony to deport their convicted criminals – these people are the predecessors to many of today’s citizens. Australians are famous for playing rugby and calling each-other “mates”.

5. Finland – 7,7 points

This is the country that brought us Nokia – the worlds largest manufacturer of mobile phones. In 2003 Nokia accounted for about a quarter of Finland’s exports and in 2006 it generated more revenue than the entire budget of Finland.  Before starting to make mobile phones Nokia made (yes, it’s true) rubber boots!  Finland was also home to Simo Häyhä – considered to be the most deadly sniper through history with 542 kills. According to World Economic Forum Finland has the most competitive economy in the world. Plenty to be happy about!

4. Iceland – 7,8 points

This geologically active country is rich in volcanoes and geysers (A geyser is a hot spring that erupts water in certain intervals). Thanks to geothermal power Iceland gets its electricity and hot water dirt cheap. There have been occasions where steel has been shipped for processing from Australia or Africa and when finished shipped back to the originating country. Cheap local energy actually makes this cost effective. According to the Human Development Index, Iceland (together with Norway) is the world’s most developed country.

3. Austria – 8,0 points

Austria is the home to the popular energy drink Red Bull. This country is also one of the few in the world, that allows legal voting beginning from age 16. Upon turning 18, all Austrian males have to take part of a 6 month military service. The country has declared itself formally a neutral country or a  “perpetual neutrality” as they say it, but in reality it has taken part of various peacekeeping missions and also took part of the UN sanctions against Iraq. Thanks to the wide use of wind-, solar- and hydropower Austria produces around 80% of its energy from renewable resources. Education is mostly free, with the exception of an average semester fee of 583 dollars (370 eur) in universities. As you probably guessed – student loan debts are not an issue in Austria.

2. Switzerland – 8,1 points

This cheese and chocolate producing land is the world’s 10th richest country. Switzerland’s neutrality helped their banks to raise some serious cash – for decades it was possible to open a bank account without having to identify yourself. Upon opening an account, you were given a special number that anyone could use to deposit or withdraw money. This law was later changed since it attracted illegal money. Switzerland is also one of the top garbage recyclers in the world (66% to 96% recyclable materials recycled). They achieve this by keeping recycling free, but asking money for regular garbage – thus giving people a financial incentive to recycle.

1. Denmark – 8,2 points

Just like Sweden, Denmark is a Nordic welfare state with most of its services free to the citizens. Expect to pay 72% of your money to the government on the highest income tax bracket. According to Wikipedia Denmark has the worlds highest taxes! When buying a car in Denmark one has to pay 25% VAT to the import price of the vehicle and then a 180% registration tax on top. That means when a car sells for $20 000, you have to pay an additional $45 000 as taxes for the government (total of $65 000). That’s why people in Denmark ride bikes or use one of the best public transport systems in the world. Denmark also has 2 autonomous provinces – the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The latter is over 50 times larger than Denmark but has about 100 times less people.

Other notable countries

  • USA – 7.4 points – 17th place
  • Great Britain – 7.1 points – 22nd place
  • France – 6.5 points – 39th place
  • China – 6.3 points – 44th place
  • India – 6.3 points – 45th place
  • Japan – 6.3 points – 46th place

I’ve been to 4 out of 10 happiest countries in the world – Luxembourg, Sweden, Finland and Denmark! What’s your score?

India was the best country in the past, and will remain. that is a fact. India has given so much to the world in every field be it science, mathematics, arts, culture, yoga, ayurveda and the list goes on. i admit that india has not done much in the case of absolutely USELESS innovations,on which the west claims they are the best. for eg, they made engine, due to which the human race in in grave danger due to the increasing pollution. they made industries which pollute our planet.they made tv due to which people are getting obese and getting diseases and getting more and more monotonous, because in their every movie, the characters behave in same manner. they do not know to behave other way, they do not know that there are infinite possibilities in the universe.
they made video games due to which our children are getting retarded(i think most of the youths in US have personality disorder).

due to their disgusting ‘innovations’ , we are getting more and more separated from the nature and wasting our life.we are getting away from the reality.
for me India was,is and will be best. but if you compare a country like Pakistan with US,UK, Europe i think Pakistan is better. at least there people are not fake, robotic, overacting, and boasting about their pathetic ‘innovations’. they are only misguided by their obsolete religion. at least they are living simple lifestyle and not wasting the resources of OUR planet.
even Iraq is better.

look at these pathetic robots, the medical system which they have invented can not even cure a common cold.and they still waste billions in making colleges where the students will study ‘medicine’ and then they will loot money from the patients for giving them useless medicine which can only extend their life a little bit. rather than curing it only makes life worse due to the side effects of their medicine.

see their ‘innovations; it shows their knowledge, it shows their culture, it shows their understanding of life.

Hi! It’s great to see that you have Sweden on your list! :)
I live in Stockholm, and I love it! We’ve just bought a new apartment in southern Stockholm and the view is fabulous! I don’t pay taxes yet, but we do get a lot of benefits from doing it.
And it’s quite fun, that Denmark is number 1. Because, even though i only passed the airport before going someplace else, I loved it! But I can’t really understand what you guys are saying, lol. But danish people find it more simple to understand swedish than we do danish….. That’s odd. And Sweden is a happy and rich land!

Hey, the US is not doing that poorly. At least we beat the French.

I have never been to Australia or Guatemala. It’s easy for me to visit European countries since I was born in one of these happy places where people are probably also happy because they make good beer and wine to go with good food.

I think allmost every person who has commented on this survey, has misunderstood something. Many of you are talking about “being great comedians” or “putting on a happy face” or “being a hard worker” as a measure of happines (especially when you are talking about Philippines, Thailand, India, certain african countries, etc.). Sadly, the thing you have not thought of is the moral and the honesty. Oh yeah, people may LOOK happy and be funny, but this is very often a way to hide a deepfelt unhappiness… The scandinavian people in general do not “LOOK” happy, but in the big picture, they are honest towards their feelings and their current situation. They do not need to cower their unhappiness, because they know they can feel unhappy without anyone blaming them – this is a greater freedom and a greater relief than being able to “look happy”. When a Scandinavian says he is happy, it is a real happiness – it means that the person has no great worries and knows that there are 5 million of other people in the country to catch one through the wellfare system if everything should go wrong. And there are no worries and no need to make savings for healthcare as EVERYTHING you need for the physical survival is FREE – hence you have all the time you need to think about your mental health and the path of happiness. This makes – not Denmark – but all the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark and Finland) the happiest countries in the world.

Apart from the aforementioned, the scandinavians have the strongest feeling of empathy in the world, in my opinion (yes, now i am just talking about my opinions). It is a funny and curious fact that both Denmark, Sweden, and (a little bit later) Norway, all chose the “universal” wellfare model (also known as the scandinavian wellfare model). The universal wellfare model requires a lot from the strong citizens, so they can provide for the weak. Now, as i can read from all of your posts, very few people understand this empathy. I think the reason is, that only a true scandinavian underestands paying over 70% in taxes, in favor of the poorer. Being Danish, i know that current surveys show, that people are willing to pay even more, if it can help the less fortunate. This is a thought that really makes me feel warm inside.

That being said, there are ALLWAYS problems to overcome in every country in the world, but some countries are still just better to live in.

I totally agree with Mark. filipino’s are happy people even if their circumstances so bad. I spent there 3 weeks and i can tell you that was the best 3 weeks in my life. When i arrived there i was shocked what i saw , but after a few days i enjoyed the simplicity of the country. People are friendly and seeking your friendship. There are scams and some try to get money out of you but it is understandable if you see the way some people live.
They have learnt how to survive without money. Their smile makes you happy too.

I dont believe too much on this survey beacuse you could not expect to get an accurate result from 1 million people out of 100 million people living in a certain place or countries which has a bigger population than any countries in the World. The real happiness could be measured on life expectancy of a certain countries beacuse I do believe that countries with a long life expectancy are more happier than those people living on a country with a shorter life expectancy. Basically a worried and unhappy people shorter their life compare to those people with a positive minds in the world. Faith of any religion also help life expectancy beacuse faith boosted positve thinking on their daily lives. What ever their living status or form of their goverments it is on their own capacity to adopt their own environments, who could say Japan the second world largest economy in the world is more happier than North Korea when more Japanese commit suicide during the 2008 world crisis. Above all it is Gods own judgement who really are the happy people in the world.

I think your quoted fact that Luxembourg has the highest consumption per person of alcohol in the world. Obviously it is difficult to measure consumption, but you can measure sales of alcohol. Luxembourg is comparatively cheap for alcohol (not for hotels though!) when you look at it’s neighbours and therefore a large amount of alcohol sold in Luxembourg is being bought by it’s neighbours’ citizens.
I’m sure North Korea is actually the happiest country in the world!

geez? what’s with all these filipinos insisting they are one of the happiest people?

like, their country is almost non-existent and unimportant.

most people complain of their boring and poor lives nad many filipinos migrate or work abroad just to escape the sad reality of their country.

is that what you call happy? get real

Reply

DNJB January 16, 2011 at 8:25 pm

Do you really think that Filipinos go out of their country to escape their ‘boring’ and ‘poor’ lives? To escape the ‘sad reality’ of their country?
If that were true they would bring their families with them instead of leaving them at home.
My best friend would be in Qatar with her father instead of waiting for him to come home every two years.
My cousin would be with her father, going to places like Singapore and Malaysia instead of waiting to spend time with him every summer for only two months.
Filipinos go to other countries for their families. So that their families can enjoy life.
So think again.

philippines may not be the happiest country in the world, but it must be at least on the top 20. try watching newscasts about calamities and disasters you would see filipinos waving behind the reporter. lol

mmm…Strange list…
The happiest countries have the highest suicide rate (Finland for example).
I have lived in Canada and I can’t say Canadian are happy people…
I think you measured the happiness taking too much into consideration the wealthy factor.
It’s strange Spain isn’t in the list…

the philippines must high rank in the hppiness index for so many reasons. despite of the neagive news anout he country, the peope remain happy and content about wht they have. The family is the most essential part of their lives and to be suppounded by their family is nough to make anyone feel good and happy. Our country is often visited by natural calamities, througout the year more than 20 strong typhoons would cross the country, among others but those problems would not take away our famous smile in our face…

USA is NOT the best country as many of you arrogant jerks are saying. Above all else, whoever said we have the hottest girls in the world is really freaking stupid. If you consider anorexic/bulimic bimbos, with implanted tits, bleached or dyed blonde hair, skin so tanned its wrinkly at a young age, always wearing phony smiles, sleeping with every third guy they know, having the all the smarts and intellect of Peter Griffin or Homer Simpson, idolizing bitches like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, or the Kardashians, and above all having a princess syndrome that would surpass that of any actual princess, to be “hot,” than, yes we do I suppose.

Not to mention that we have two thirds of our citizens obese, overweight, or fat, and that percentage is increasing, so how can you dumbasses say America has the hottest girls?

Embarrassed US Citizen February 4, 2011 at 1:39 pm

Those comments about America having the hottest girls pissed me off more than any of the other stupid comments, but a lot of others did as well. The complaints about high taxes in Denmark also really irked me, as low taxes are not always a good thing-especially not when in this country 50 million people have no health insurance, 13 million children are hungry, and half a million war veterans are homeless.

The asinine claim of wealth as a prerequisite for happiness came close to pissing me off as much as the “America has the hottest girls” comments, as I have been to Costa Rica, and despite them being (by US standards) very cash-poor, they were always smiling, laughing, jumping with joy, singing and celebrating, despite having so little material wealth.

So if you want my pick for happiest country, it would be, from my greatly limited experience, Costa Rica, hands down.

Finally, people need to stop referring to only the US as “America.” Brazil, Cuba, Canada, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Belize, Barbados, the Bahamas, Mexico El Salvador, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Haiti, Honduras, Venezuela, Argentina, Guyana, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic, Suriname, Chile, Paraguay, Grenada, St. Lucia, Uruguay, Greenland, Bermuda and French Guiana are all parts of America too.

I live in Israel. It’s one of the richest countries and very very developed for it’s age, but people are still not very happy in here.
It’s a very tense country. every one’s always in a rush and there are TONS of conflicts all over.
whether they are with outside factors such as the Muslim countries, and whether they are inside factors such as fraud and political corruption.

People used to be happy in here during the first years of the settlements. we have all the reasons to be happy: lots of sunshine, plenty of extremely fertile soil, great agriculture and by far the tastiest vegetables, beautiful sea, great landscape, amazing people.
but sadness crept in as we got influenced by the big world and started competing with each other and with the rest of the world for prestige and money.

Great Britain isn’t a country – it is an island, part of the country that is called the United Kingdom. Indonesia is not called ‘Sumatra’, nor Japan ‘Honshu’, so why is the UK often referred to as ‘Great Britain’? The correct name for the country has been ‘The United Kingdom’ since the year 1801. Why are many people across the globe still making this simple error?

Can happiness really be measured by asking a person or by the richest he has? What if all material things are taken away from you, then you would no longer be happy? As Zig Ziglar would out it, happiness is not a when or a where… But a here and. now.
