I like your idea of having a big goal that should actually consist of several smaller ones.

I have done this in my life in as a door to door salesman. My goal was to find 30 people every day to make sales presentations to! When thinking about it in the morning it was clear to me that there is no way that I can find 30 people today, so we looked it another way - Can I find 3 people before 9 am ? You bet I can! Can I find another 2 people between 9am and 10 am? Yes I can!
Achieving these smaller goals insured that by 9:30 PM I have achieved my primary goal - make 30 presentations!
We even had small "goal cards" where we kept track of how many presentations we still need to make that hour. So instead of saying to yourself - 27 more, I would say "Just 1 more! Only 1 more"

Well, you could combine both approaches so that you make yourself a ladder of specific goals. This way when you achieve one, you have the next one waiting. You won't lose your sense of life purpose or identity because you'll always have known that you're more than just that one goal. If you fail, you try for the goal another way, or you just change your plans.

But I am far from a self-help professional/ star! If only it were that easy!

But I do think it's important not to set only small goals. You need to try to dream big for your life and allow the picture to shift a little over time, too. Dream big, but specific. Leave room for editing the picture a little bit too as you get more information about your goal.

I've read numerous accounts about people with a really huge goal in their life. Let's say that you've been training to win an Olympic gold medal since you were 3. After achieving this goal people tend to describe that they feel they have lost their purpose of life and discover that it was never really the goal that made them happy, but the hope of one day achieving this goal. So maybe it's a good idea that you never accomplish your biggest goals, but always have new goals to pursue.
It's the journey not the destination!

Sorry Roman, I thought about that over a beer last night. "wait, that dudes not Jesus"
So I will refrain in the future.
On goal setting, If you change it, then how do mark progress? Do you adjust your goal up or down? Yea, I'll agree, its your life, do what you want.
The universe however, works on an inflexible level. So when you alter your goal you stop the process and when you "redefine" you are starting from scratch.
Think of it as telling another human to go over "there". Where? Not a clear goal. Then you want to say no, no, over there. Its confusing just to read. So a clear goal followed by a clear plan. Gets you a clear result.

It seems kind of strange when someone calls me Jesus  My real name is Roman, so you can call me that! I guess I have to put a little info up here somewhere about myself.

I agree that the clearer the vision the better.
If for some reason your definition of being rich or your goals change it makes sense to accept the changes. You have not failed when you decide to change your goals - it is your life so the best part is that if you want you can change your goals!

On the surface Jesus, I would tend to agree with you. However, I believe that a definition should be clear and concise. For example, on your goal, perhaps,

"I am rich when I can do whatever I want to do whenever I want it!"

Should look like

I am rich when I can travel around the world for six years and never consider time or money.

My point is, a clear definition sets the stage for a clear vision. If your "whatever" changes and you cant do it. (travel in space?) Have you failed?
