And even without money there were people who were rich - these people simply had the most power and most useful things that made them valuable in the eyes of other people. I agree that in today's world it would be really difficult to live without money, but since I am a fan of science and fiction I truly believe that during a couple of hundred years money will be obsolete and most people will be doing whatever they want. Robots and little nanobots(really tiny robots) will be doing all the work. In theory these nanobots could take for example molecules of air and make gold molecules out of them... or maybe an entire car...
